The remit was to use the vast archives of the Devon Record office as a resource for a new work of art. I focussed on two documents, the diaries of a prison chaplain from 1842-43 and the Court (Quarter)session records of the same time. The work centers around the idea of imagining a semi fictitious character that appears in both documents.
„Trying to meet Matilda Brimmacombe“ is a speculative juxtaposition of contemporary characters with materials from the 1843 court case and subsequent prison records, executed in a combination of screen print and etching.
